Three tips to give your resume an edge

A well-written resume can make all the difference. In reality, your resume only has a few seconds to get you in the door. After all, hiring authorities are reviewing hundreds of resumes depending on the position.

Here are a few things we see that make a big difference:

• In general, a strong resume should be one to two pages – but not longer, even if someone has had a 20-plus year career.

• While it is important to list duties and aspects of responsibilities one has had in their roles, what will make them standout is listing their accomplishments with each. An example would be how they have either made or saved their employers money or achieved in some way. It might be through a process they implemented due to finding inefficiencies, successful negotiation of contracts with vendors, statistical information (especially if someone is in a direct/indirect sales role), recognition/awards received for outstanding performance, successfully leading a software implementation, etc.

• At times we see people just listing their most current position with their employer, versus highlighting their progression, which we feel is a critical mistake. However, when one has progressed within a company and has multiple positions to list, it is important to have a main heading listing dates that show first date of hire through present (or final date) and then list dates under each position title, so at a quick glance it doesn’t appear one is a job hopper.

These are just a few aspects that make a resume stronger, which might just be the things that could get you the phone call you’ve been waiting for.
